Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on this. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and has grossed more than $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
