Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID is 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing major areas of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably absolutely not the account of a mighty king emerging; instead, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for others, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you must offer him your sweater as well.
The evident and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a form of profound affection centered on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.
A Conflict for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to witness the persistent defiance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the best parts within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?
America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior. In all circumstances does it imply pretending the most damaging regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it means both meekness and faith, a mixture that genuine US believers should be comfortable with.
