Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
