"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
